چکیده

The geometry of reflection and refraction explains the apparent position of a rainbow relative to the sun, and calculus shows why light is concentrated in the rainbow. Exercises include the derivation of Snell’s Law and the Law of Reflection, an explanation for the different colors in the rainbow, and an exploration of secondary and tertiary rainbows. This is intended as a one-hour lecture for honors calculus, with exercises which students can work through on their own. Observation of Rainbows What do you need to make a rainbow? Of course, you need at least two things, rain and sun. Closer examination reveals more details–but not more ingredients! Not all rainbows are alike. Suppose you see a rainbow at sunset (or sunrise). rainbow setting sun observer angle to

Rainbows by elliptically deformed drops. II. The appearance of supernumeraries of high-order rainbows in rain showers.

The appearance of supernumeraries of high-order rainbows in heavy rain showers is explored for rainbows up to order five (p=6). This is done by using a combination of the ray-theory-based first-order Möbius approximation for high-order rainbows with the Airy approximation of the rainbow radiance distribution. We conclude that supernumerary formation of rainbows of order three, four, and five is...

An analytic study on the Euler-Lagrange equation arising in calculus of variations

The Euler-Lagrange equation plays an important role in the minimization problems of the calculus of variations. This paper employs the differential transformation method (DTM) for finding the solution of the Euler-Lagrange equation which arise from problems of calculus of variations. DTM provides an analytical solution in the form of an infinite power series with easily computable components. S...

On certain fractional calculus operators involving generalized Mittag-Leffler function

The object of this paper is to establish certain generalized fractional integration and differentiation involving generalized Mittag-Leffler function defined by Salim and Faraj [25]. The considered generalized fractional calculus operators contain the Appell's function $F_3$ [2, p.224] as kernel and are introduced by Saigo and Maeda [23]. The Marichev-Saigo-Maeda fractional calculus operators a...

NON-POLYNOMIAL SPLINE FOR THE NUMERICAL SOLUTION OF PROBLEMS IN CALCULUS OF VARIATIONS

A Class of new methods based on a septic non-polynomial spline function for the numerical solution of problems in calculus of variations is presented. The local truncation errors and the methods of order 2th, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th, and 12th, are obtained. The inverse of some band matrixes are obtained which are required in proving the convergence analysis of the presented method. Convergence anal...

A Formalism for the Description of Protein Interaction Dedicated to Jerzy Tiuryn on the Occasion of his 60th Birthday

The Calculus of Looping Sequences is a formalism for describing evolution of biological systems by means of term rewriting rules. We propose to enrich this calculus by labelling elements of sequences. Since two elements with the same label are considered to be linked, this allows us to represent protein interaction at the domain level. Well-formedness of terms are ensured by both a syntactic co...
